Rhonda is a 38 year old educational tech who lives with her husband , son and two daughters in Bridgton. She had uncontrolled seizures and underwent surgery for the removal of part of her brain in December of 2004. Upon admission to New England Rehab Hospital, she had right hemiparesis, a pulmonary embolism, dysphagia, and other secondary diagnoses.
Rhonda had a long course of therapy both as an inpatient and outpatient. Initially she had poor insight into her difficulties, wanted to take care of her children, go back to driving and to work. Pretty quickly she started making gains and realized her difficulties. When she was discharged from NERHP's inpatient facility, she would continue her therapy as an outpatient, working on cognition, speech therapy and physical therapy. However, the realization of the depth of her impairments sent Rhonda into a deep depression. Within a couple of months, she pulled herself out of her depression and started making cognitive gains by leaps and bounds. She began to take care of her children, passed her driving test and eventually started volunteering at her children's school. She was discharged from outpatient therapy in June of 2006 and is now enjoying her family. She has also resumed her work in the local school system.
Rhonda is very proud of her achievements; she feels she has found her inner strength and developed her self-confidence through her experience.
