Charles "Chuck" Mill
Charles "Chuck" Mill, age 50, of Westbrook was diagnosed with Guillian-Barre Disease in April 2006. Guillian-Barre Disease is a debilitating disease that affects the nervous system and is usually caused by a viral infection. Chuck's case was extreme. He had no strength in any of his extremities and minimum movement. He could not care for himself. Slowly he gained function to allow walking but his upper extremities did not return as quickly. His therapy team needed to be creative in developing mechanisms to maximize his function.
"Throughout all his difficult times that one thing that stood out about Chuck was his positive spirit," states Jen Burr, NERHP occupational therapist. "A smile was always on his face bringing joy to all who were around him!" Chuck remained an inpatient at NERHP for one month, was transferred to a skilled nursing facility, and then was discharged home to his own apartment. Chuck attends NERHP's outpatient department to continue working hard at regaining arm function.
Today Chuck lives independently, is driving and enjoying all his favorite activities. He was nominated for a National Rehab Week patient award 2007 as "Chuck truly depicts a model for an acute rehab patient who never gives up," Jen proudly reflects.
