Edward "Ned" Hatfield
Edward "Ned" Hatfield, from Freedom, NH, suffered a stroke 3 days before Christmas in 2006. He was initially seen at a local hospital in New Hampshire but was sent to Maine Medical Center. Ned transferred to NERHP in January 2007.
Ned was a healthy, active 67 year old living with his wife Pat in a restored farmhouse which they had recently opened into a bed and breakfast. He is an educator by profession. His therapists at NERHP realized he had a will and desire so strong to recover that he routinely amazed them with his determination and fortitude. Therapy started slowly with having Ned tolerate sitting up, then eventually standing in a standing frame where he could work on lifting his head and shoulders. Gradually over weeks of intensive therapies by all disciplines, Ned continued to progress step by step.
By the time Ned left NERHP in March, he had begun to transfer himself out of bed to his wheelchair and was walking with a standard rolling walker. Upon a recent visit to his home, Jana Frank, NERHP physical therapist, found him walking independently. He gets up in the morning, bathes and dresses, prepares his own breakfast, works at his stretching and strengthening exercises and visits a local pool twice a week. His current goal is to be able to stack wood and devise a way to carry it into the house.
Ned was nominated for a National Rehab Week patient award 2007 because "he exemplifies how to overcome the barrier of defeat," states Jana. "He has had many opportunities to give in to all of the obstacles he has faced each day, but he never did."
