Triesti Russell
As part of National Rehabilitation Week, September 21st through September 27th, New England Rehabilitation Hospital of Portland celebrated the accomplishments of four exemplary patients. Our staff nominates and selects patients who have overcome major barriers while recovering and rehabilitating from illness or injury. Their achievements were recognized at an awards ceremony to be held on Wednesday, September 24, 2008.
Triesti Russell, from Portland, was selected as one of the patient award winners. Triesti had chronic back and leg pain from an accidental injury. She had not walked in 12 years. She worked extremely hard in therapy tolerating excruciating pain while going through various exercises and tasks to progress her tolerance to being able to bear weight on her legs. By the end of her therapy, just over 1 year later, she was not only able to walk, but she reached her goal of snowshoeing with the Maine Handicapped Skiing program.
Triesti is currently involved in other Maine Handicapped Skiing sports, including kayaking and cycling and has continued swimming at NERH’s maintenance program. She is also planning on recertifying her scuba diving certification this year. Shelly Coull, physical therapist, states, "Triesti is one of those patients that we will never forget treating and is absolutely an excellent candidate for the National Rehab Week patient award."
