    Dennis Archambault

Dennis receives congratulations on his achievements from Mary Otis, RN, who was one of the nurses who cared for him while he was at Maine Medical Center.
New England Rehabilitation Hospital of Portland recently honored four inspirational patients who have overcome barriers and exceeded expectations. Each year, during National Rehabilitation Awareness Week, the clinical staff at New England Rehabilitation Hospital, select patients who have faced near impossible challenges and showed strength and determination through their rehabilitation process.

Among the honorees, the achievements of Dennis Archambault were celebrated at a ceremony held on September 23rd at the hospital. Archambault, who lives in Portland, is an amputee. Shelley Coull, Dennis’ physical therapist, states, “In all my years of treating patients, I have never witnessed such strength and perseverance as shown by Dennis. With his wife and son by his side, he’s not only survived, he is thriving.”

Dennis has overcome near impossible challenges. With a history of Hodgkins lymphoma he was susceptible to infection and contracted meningococcemia, a bacterial infection. Not only were both of his legs amputated below the knee but he lost all of his lip tissue, the top of his nose and fingertips. Dennis spent approx 6 months in the hospital. During his stay he had to learn how to walk, talk, speak without the use of his lips and eat again, as well as take care of himself. He eventually returned to being fully mobile, able to attend to his 10 year old son’s baseball and football games, went back to work full-time and resumed oral intake of food and liquid. He has had multiple oral and facial surgeries. Dennis is now a peer visitor for another amputation patient at New England Rehabilitation Hospital.
