New England Rehabilitation Hospital of Portland recently honored four inspirational patients who have overcome barriers and exceeded expectations. Each year, during National Rehabilitation Awareness Week, the clinical staff at New England Rehabilitation Hospital, select patients who have faced near impossible challenges and showed strength and determination through their rehabilitation process.
Among the honorees, the achievements of Johnathan Kretchmer were celebrated at a ceremony held on September 23rd at the hospital. Kretchmer, who lives in South Portland, is recovering from a brain injury he sustained from a motor vehicle accident. “Johnathan has endured intense outpatient rehabilitation for over a year, but made unbelievable gains and always wanted to do more,” states Donna Bisbee, his speech language pathologist.
Johnathan was 19 years going to school in Indiana when he was involved in a rollover motor vehicle accident. He sustained a severe brain injury. He remained in Indiana until his mother was able to bring him back to Maine where he could receive continued rehabilitation closer to home. Johnathan was in wheelchair and unable to walk. He could not talk or do anything for himself. He has endured intense rehab therapy for over a year. With hard work and the support from family, today he attends school, is able to talk, eat and attend to his daily needs.
