Each year, during National Rehabilitation Awareness Week, the clinical staff at New England Rehabilitation Hospital, select patients who have faced near impossible challenges and showed strength and determination through their rehabilitation process.
Among the honorees, the achievements of Ralph Harris were celebrated at a ceremony held on September 23rd at the hospital. Harris, from Old Orchard Beach, is a stroke survivor. “What is unique about Ralph,” states Emily Malanchuk, his physical therapist, is that he faced the challenges of his rehabilitation with full understanding of his situation and he faced them with a positive attitude and determination.”
Ralph started his rehabilitation working on being able to sit up from laying flat in bed, and maintaining his balance while trying to figure out how to put on his shoes. Strength returned to his leg first, then his arm and hand. Each day he faced a new challenge. What is unique about Ralph is that he faced the challenges of his rehabilitation with full understanding of his situation and he faced them with a positive, sunny attitude and determination. Ralph was passionate about golf and only lived a short distance from the course. His dream was to be able to walk the course again, and he did. Despite the ups and downs of recovery, his motivation and hard work has put him on the golf course again.
