Marc Bilodeau
Marc, a 55 year old from Poland, Maine, received a diagnosis of Guillian Barre (a debilitating neurological disease) in 2002. Due to the illness, he was hospitalized in an acute care facility, on a ventilator, and unable to move any of his extremities.
On admission to New England Rehabilitation Hospital of Portland in September of 2002, he was paralyzed from the neck down, had contractures of the small joints of his hands, significant pain issues, a tracheotomy, a urinary catheter and was totally dependant for care.
Four months later, after an intensive rehabilitation program, he was discharged to Togus having made tremendous improvements. He had regained his independence using a powered wheel chair. He was independent with bed mobility and, once standing upright, he could walk 50-100 feet with a platform walker.
Now, after two years of continued rehabilitation as an outpatient, he enjoys white water rafting, golfing, swimming and canoeing. He also founded a program that assists people with handicaps in obtaining, learning how to use and repair computers. Throughout the entire journey, Marc remained cheerful and positive.
